Dear Friends:
.org%2Fpetition2%2Findex.php> You already know that nuclear power can't
save the climate.
Many of you already have signed the basic statement on nuclear power and
climate--if you haven't signed yet, please click on the ad to the right
and add your name, and organization if you have one, today!
But you may not be aware just how urgent this issue is, nor how close we
are to wasting billions of dollars on new atomic reactors--money that is
desperately needed to implement the renewable energy, energy efficiency
and advanced distributed generation systems we need to effectively
address the growing climate crisis.
We don't have much time. We need to make our statement now.
Will you help? We need to bring our statement to more blogs and
websites, we need to gather more signatures. Web advertising isn't
expensive, but it costs more than we can cover. With your help, we can
place the ad to the right on DailyKos, Mother Jones, The Nation, and
elsewhere to reach the people who care enough to act, and act now.
Please contribute as generously as you can at our secure site:

LangPref=en-CA> Just $5,000 in contributions will enable us to reach
1,000,000 more people--that's less than $5 from each of you; if you can
each give us $25, we'll be able to reach several million people by the
end of the month!
Please act: because climate change is already happening! It's no longer
science fiction, no longer something in the future: It's not next year
or next decade, it's now. Just yesterday, a new study shows that carbon
emissions have reached a danger threshold not expected for another ten
years. And the Arctic is already melting...
Even if nuclear power effectively reduced carbon emissions--and it
doesn't; and even if nuclear power weren't itself an environmental
disaster--and it is; we still couldn't afford it. Not only is it
uneconomic, but we don't have enough time. New reactors take 10 years to
license and build--we no longer have 10 years to begin reducing carbon
emissions. Wasting our precious resources on nuclear power now means we
won't have enough resources to implement the renewable and energy
efficient technologies we need to avert a climate catastrophe.

And, if you've read this far, a special bonus! For every contribution of
$60 or more, Bonnie Raitt wants to offer her appreciation. We'll send
you a free copy of her Souls Alike CD as both her and our way of saying
thank you for helping us bring this critical issue to the attention of
more and more people.
We're confident that if we can get this simple ad to a broader audience,
we will receive many more signatures. In just five weeks, more than 400
organizations and more than 4,500 individuals already signed-with a
little more outreach, we can obtain many thousands more signatures in
time for the convening of the next Congress--the kind of numbers that
will make Congress sit up and take notice!
We need your help to do the necessary outreach. Help us bring this ad to
a larger and larger audience.

MySpace, Facebook and other social networking pages, in your
newsletters, and any other outreach method you have. You can also
download a printed copy of the statement at www.nirs.org

to the total as well.
