[NukeNet] A very sad story

Actually, the site for the southwestern compact, Ward Valley, is beyond "contested". CA State law now not only completely prohibits shallow-land burial of radioactive waste, it also specifically prohibits Ward Valley as a site choice. So, unless there has been a new site selection for the southwest compact (and if someone knows of this please let me know), the wonderful chart Frieda supplied should be corrected to read "Site disallowed"

After revealing Delaware's story and its involvement in the Appalachian compact last week. Here is the status of all the compacts. After all the money spent, all the great proclamations made in 1988. Problem declared solved, here is the true story: NONE of the compacts got off the ground. Like all the other promises made by the nuclear Industry
about safety, cost, and reliability this is indeed one of the saddest stories.

Subject: Low level nuclear waste

  Hello Harry:

Long time no see (or hear), I hope all is well with you. As you can well imagine I am still very busy on the national level concerning nuclear power
I have not done much concerning low level waste other then help the effort to keep it out of our landfills after repeated attempts to de-classify. So far so good. We generated over 10.000 e mails at the last attempt.
The new developments at Barnwell However tells me that the "constipation" in the nuclear fuel cycle is not confined to rad waste.
I wonder if you could tell me about the status of the Appalachian compact.
  1) Does PA have a designated site by now No, the siting project was tabled several years ago. The project had progressed to the point of announcing five possible locations that would have been subject to detailed Environmental Impact Evaluations.
  2) what is DE's financial contribution to the compact None for several years now. To cut expenses, we closed the Commission office, released the CEO from his contract, released off his secretary, sold off the office furniture, provided for storing the Commission records, and established provisions to reactivate the office when needed. The Commission meets annually -- next meeting at 10:00 a.m. on November 9 at the Harrisburg Hilton.
  3) does our medical waste go to PA at this time No
Appalachian total 13.70% Delaware <.01% Pennsylvania** 13.40% Maryland 0.29% West Virginia <.01% As you know I was against joining a compact , I thought due to the small volume we could take care of it.(I even had the perfect place for it: The tip of Artificial Island which belongs to Delaware)
  The very best to you
  Frieda Berryhill

"It is worth noting that, in the USA alone, there are an estimated 45,000 sites which are polluted or potentially polluted by radioactive poisons --- according to a report commissioned by the Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 (see EPA 1992). Worldwide, there is radioactive pollution from above-ground bomb tests. There is also the radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl accident in Europe and the former USSR. The fact that humans have already created large amounts of nuclear pollution, adds to the moral argument for allowing no more." http://www.ratical.com/radiation/CNR/YuccaMtnRWRP.html
