Peace groups in Tennessee and Georgia are planning a major event in
Jonesborough, TN, for October 27, in a broad effort to stop the production
and use of depleted uranium munitions and to demand cleanup of radiation and
toxic contamination from these weapons throughout the U.S. and abroad as
well as health remedies for those afflicted.

Aerojet Ordnance in Jonesborough is one of the remaining U.S. producers of
depleted uranium weapons cores that have been tested in Vieques, Hawaii and
throughout the U.S. as well as used in combat in Iraq, the Balkans,
Afghanistan, and possibly in Lebanon.

The Jonesborough event is one of several fostered by the national United for
Peace and Justice organization for that date and the only one addressing the
DU theme. We, the organizers for Jonesborough, are in the midst of seeking
speakers for the rally, the march on Aerojet, as well as musicians for the
gathering.

People in Vieques are planning to send a speaker and delegate as well to the
Oct. 27 Jonesborough event, with financial support from Stop-DU in Indiana
and possibly Christian Peacemaker Teams. CPT will also have an anti-DU
delegation in Jonesborough from Oct. 26 to Nov. 4, which will include
representatives from Ghana and Nepal (see www.cpt.org for more information
on its delegation).

(I¹ll be in Vieques Sept. 18-26 to continue filming a documentary on DU
contamination and again in NYC on Oct. 2-3 for an international conference
sponsored by the London-based International Coalition to Ban Depleted
Uranium Weapons, where we¹ll also seek support and representation.)

Key organizers and supporters for the Jonesborough DU event include
representatives from the Georgia Peace and Justice Coalition in Atlanta
including Angela Helwig, Linda Modica of the Sierra Club¹s radiation
committee and First Tennessee Progressives, and Chris Lugo of the Nashville
Peace Coalition, who was Green Party candidate for the U.S. Senate last year
(running as an independent). It¹s anticipated that as many as 500 persons
will take part on Oct. 27.

For background on depleted uranium munitions and their dangers, you may
visit http://du-blog.wildclearing.com and especially links on that site.
Rough video clips from sequences of the documentary filmed so far can be
found at http://www.wildclearing.com/du-resources.html Š

If you know of speakers and musicians you¹d like to recommend, please let us
know.

Thanks,
